Safeguarding Policy

How we keep children safe — our Designated Safeguarding Lead, safer recruitment, and how any concern is raised and handled.

Last updated: 24 September 2026

Read before publishing: safeguarding is the one area of this website where a template genuinely cannot stand in for the real thing. This page is a standard, EYFS-aligned starting structure — but it must be completed, personalised, and formally signed off by your registered provider and a named Designated Safeguarding Lead before it goes live, and checked against the statutory guidance (Working Together to Safeguard Children, and the EYFS safeguarding and welfare requirements) in force at the time. Please don't treat the placeholder text below as adequate on its own.

Our commitment

E-Star Nursery's paramount responsibility is the welfare and safety of every child in our care. Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility here — every member of staff, volunteer, and visitor is expected to know how to recognise a concern and how to raise it, without delay and without needing anyone else's permission first.

Designated Safeguarding Lead

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is [name, role], contactable on [phone/email]. Our Deputy DSL is [name, role]. Between them, at least one is present, or contactable, whenever the setting is open.

Safer recruitment

Every staff member is recruited following safer-recruitment practice: an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, verified references covering their most recent employment, identity and right-to-work checks, and a structured induction covering this policy before they are left unsupervised with children.

Recognising and responding to a concern

Any adult in the setting who has a concern about a child's welfare — including a disclosure made directly by a child, a change in behaviour, or something said by a parent or visitor — reports it to the DSL the same day, recorded in writing in the setting's confidential safeguarding record. The DSL decides, following the local safeguarding partnership's threshold guidance, whether a referral to children's social care or the police is needed, and acts without unnecessary delay.

Whistleblowing

Any member of staff who has a concern about the conduct of a colleague — including the DSL — can raise it directly with [registered provider / nominated individual], or externally with the NSPCC whistleblowing helpline or Ofsted, without fear of reprisal.

Online safety and photography

Personal mobile phones are never used to photograph children. Any photography for learning journals or the setting's own records uses setting-owned devices only, is stored securely, and is only shared publicly (including on this website) once separate, specific parental consent has been recorded for that use — see our Privacy Policy for how that consent and any related data is handled.

Working with other agencies

We work with the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) on any concern about an adult working with children, and with our local safeguarding partnership on wider concerns, sharing information only on a need-to-know basis and in line with data protection law.

Related policies

This page summarises our approach; it sits alongside fuller internal policies not published on this website, including a Safer Recruitment Policy, a Whistleblowing Policy, an E-Safety Policy, and a Behaviour Management Policy — available from the setting on request.

Review

This policy is reviewed at least annually, and immediately after any safeguarding incident or change in statutory guidance. Next review: [date].
